Biography
Professional Percussionist and Teacher for over 30 Years
Mr. Haskins is a shining example of perseverance and dedication, having graduated from the prestigious Armed Forces School of Music in Little Creek, VA. This pivotal moment launched him into an illustrious journey with the United States Marine Corps Field Bands, where he proudly served with the esteemed Marine Bands in Okinawa, Japan, and Parris Island, SC. In 1993, after an intense live audition, he reached new heights as a finalist for the highly regarded Commandant's Own, United States Marine Drum and Bugle Corps in Washington, D.C. His talents didn't stop there; he was also invited to showcase his skills in live auditions for the historic Old Guard Drum and Fife Corps and "Hellcat's" Drum and Bugle Corps at the United States Military Academy in West Point, NY. Mr. Haskins’ journey took him around the globe, where he brought joy through music at significant events, including the D-Day ceremonies at Utah Beach in France, and commemorative ceremonies in Holland celebrating World War II battles. This remarkable military career led him to perform for many distinguished individuals, including the President of the United States. As a dedicated adjudicator for the Mississippi Lion's All-State Band, Mr. Haskins passionately imparts his knowledge through private percussion lessons, holding a Masters of Music Education degree from William Carey University. Currently, he serves as the Assistant Band Director and Director of Percussion at Southwest Mississippi Community College, where he inspires percussion majors through engaging music lessons, guiding the marching band, conducting percussion ensembles, and supporting the Stageband Show. With over 30 years of professional performance and teaching experience, Mr. Haskins is fueled by his unwavering commitment to seeing his students shine in percussion. He takes pride in watching his students blossom into professional band directors and continue to excel in Drum Corps and All-State bands across the nation.
